President's message

Shaping the future of AI

At MBZUAI, we are building more than a university. We are creating a hub for global AI leadership, innovation, and impact.

Our mission is to push the frontiers of artificial intelligence and use it to solve real-world challenges — as well as addressing the challenges it presents. From developing cutting-edge research in generative AI, sustainability, and healthcare, to launching new programs in robotics and applied AI, we are actively shaping the future of technology and its role in society.

We have built a diverse, world-class community of faculty, researchers, and students. With talent drawn from around the world, MBZUAI offers a unique environment where academic excellence meets practical relevance. Our graduates go on to lead, innovate, and serve – helping to transform industries, improve lives, and contribute to the global AI ecosystem.

Our commitment extends beyond research and education. We support start-ups through our Incubation and Entrepreneurship Center, foster industry collaboration, and engage directly with government and community partners. We are also growing our role as a convener – bringing together leading minds to explore AI's intersections with science, biology, language, and more.

Our vision is bold. We aim to become the Stanford of the Middle East – an engine of technological and economic progress, and a source of thought leadership for the region and the world. We are building an ecosystem that empowers people, creates new opportunities, and sets global benchmarks for AI excellence.

MBZUAI is where talent meets purpose, and where ideas become action. I invite researchers, students, and partners around the world to join us on this journey.

Advancing Research

Institute of Foundation Models

Generative AI and foundation models — IFM

MBZUAI’s Institute of Foundation Models (IFM) is a multi-site initiative dedicated to pioneering academic research at the forefront of Generative AI. With lab facilities in Abu Dhabi, Silicon Valley, and Paris, the IFM is a hub for fundamental research – channelling the University’s expertise into developing powerful foundation models such as GPTs for linguistic, visual, and biological data. These models have the potential to revolutionize industries such as healthcare, climate change, and sustainability while simultaneously advancing AI innovation.

Our models include PAN – a world model capable of infinite simulations of diverse realities ranging from basic physical interactions to complex agent scenarios; Jais – the world’s most advanced Arabic large language model; K2-V2 – our most capable fully open model to date, and one of the strongest open-weight models in its class; and K2 Think – a leading open source system for advanced AI reasoning.

AI for healthcare

AI for healthcare

MBZUAI is advancing a new era of healthcare powered by AI – spanning diagnostics, therapeutics, biomedical discovery, and system-level transformation. At the core of this effort are platforms such as the Human Phenotype Project (HPP), which gathers rich, multimodal health data, and AIDO (AI-Driven Digital Organism), enabling the training of large-scale biomedical foundation models.

Through our Department of Computational Biology, we are developing generative AI models that simulate gene expression and accelerate drug discovery. And our work across other departments has led to clinical breakthroughs in fetal ultrasound screening, cancer survival prediction, and Arabic-language medical assistants for underserved populations. Through partnerships with hospitals, biotech, and government, and initiatives like the Global AI Healthcare Academy, MBZUAI is redefining what's possible in medicine – from precision care to population health at scale.

AI for sustainability

AI for sustainability

Following the UAE’s successful hosting of COP28 in 2023, MBZUAI has been exploring ways for AI to contribute positively to the nation’s sustainability goals and position it as a global technology leader in AI-enabled decarbonization and climate mitigation.

Alongside partners such as IBM, UNDP, and the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, we are focusing our research on issues such as the urban heat island (UHI) effect in desert and hot environments; malaria prediction and planning; farmer-centered AI-based weather forecasting; and cloud seeding using remote sensing and machine learning. We are also working on AI for managing clean energy infrastructure and supporting marine conservation, and have launched The Institute for Agriculture and Artificial Intelligence – a pioneering digital advisory hub for agriculture that aims to improve the lives of more than 43 million smallholder farmers.

Robotics research

Agentic Robotics

Our robotics research at MBZUAI centers around developing the world’s first ‘Universal Physical Intelligence’ – a robot brain that will allows physical machines to sense the ever-changing world around it, respond and interact safely and intelligently, and learn from its experience.

This breakthrough will turn today’s simple manufacturing, surgery, or home-based machines into everyday helpers and productive tools, transforming every industry of today and the future. This breakthrough capability will enable position the UAE as a leading global player in a robotics market that is exponentially growing.
